The Meaning of Justification

Grace is the unmerited favor of God towards humanity. It is the freely given gift of salvation that we receive through faith in Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul wrote in Ephesians 2:8-9, "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God - not the result of works, so that no one may boast." This verse emphasizes that the source of our salvation is God's grace alone, not our own efforts or good works.

The Role of Faith

Faith, as described in the Bible, is the complete trust and reliance on God's promises. In the context of justification, it is through our faith that we receive the gift of salvation. Romans 3:28 states, "For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law." This verse highlights that our faith in Christ is what enables us to be justified before God.

Justification in the Lutheran Tradition

Lutherans interpret justification by grace through faith as a central theme throughout the Bible. Martin Luther, a key figure in the Protestant Reformation, emphasized this doctrine as he sought to reform the church and rediscover the true biblical teachings.

The Bondage of Sin

Lutherans acknowledge that all humans are born into sin and are incapable of saving themselves through their own works. The Apostle Paul states in Romans 3:23, "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
